HARBOUR WORKS

ARRIVALS OF STEEL EXPEDITING OPERATIONS THE NEW EXPORT WHARF Some of tho steel for the breastwork at Mechanics' Bay, the construction of which is an essential preliminary to the building of the export wharf, has now been received by tho Auckland Harbour Board. Work is therefore likely to start at any time, being dependent on the availability of the staff which is engaged on several operations at present. The breastwork will bo of concrete sheath piling.

Steel has also arrived for several other jobs in hand. The bulk of the steel for the roofing in of Princess Wharf, the delay in the delivery of which has retarded operations which in the normal course would have been completed months ago, has been received, and the progress of the work depends largely on the labour available. It should, however, be completed before the winter. About half the new wharf being constructed between the Prince's Wharf and the Western Wharf for tho use of coastal vessels has been finished. With the return of the suction dredge after its overhaul, the deepening cf St. Mary's I3ay, and the widening of the breakwater, arc proceeding apace. Tho reclamation of the eastern end of the breakwater is now finished. It is about 140 ft. wide. By taking advantage of low water conditions in re-v cent spring tides the board has been able to complete the foundations for the viaduct bridge between the shore and the breakwater. Some of tho steel for the viaduct lias been delivered and work has started 011 the piers. The boat pound for naval small craft east of tlie Calliope Dock will soon be constructed, pile-driving for the timber breakwater nearing tho close.
