TRIUMPH FOR STRETTO

HERRIES CUP DECISIVE VICTORY SPRINT TO ROYAL BACHELOR DEAD-HEAT IN CHAMPION HACK DUTCH GIRL AND SILVER RIVER .An attractive performance by Stretto in winning the Herries Memorial Cup very decisively was an outstanding feature of the opening of the Te Aroha Jackey Club's meeting on Saturday. Stretto was coupled on the totalisator with Mazir ajid the bracket was best supported in both the win and place pools in a fine betting race. Other each-way favourites, Sandrift and Llangollen, scored outright victories and Dutch Girl dead-heated for first with Silver River in the Champion Hack Handicap, which provided a very exciting finish. The 011I3' real surprise of the day was the victory of Noitaro, who paid double figures when sho scored in the Juvenile Handicap from Kathbella. The open sprint, the Waihoib Handicap, was won by Royal Bachelor, who was second fancy oji the win machine, and fourth in demand in the place betting. The weather was very hot and the course was fast. The attendance was large and the totalisator 'handled £'5{j,257, compared with £'53,570 10s 011 the first day last year, ap increase of L'2(5S6 10s. Unfortunately some delay occurred in the running of the programme, and the last race was over half an hour late in starting. From the start Professional and Siwell were tho first to show out, and over the first fence Siwell ajid Holly Lu led from Professional, Dialogue, Englishman, Erination and Simint, Survalyon losing his rider. Along the back Holly Lu and Dialogue were three lengths clear of Siwell, who was two lengths in front of Professional, Simint, Englishman and Erination. Crossing the top Siwell and Sandrift moved up and led into the straight from Simint, Englishman, Celtic Lad and Urination. Once over the last fence Sandrift drew out and was not seriously troubled to win by three lengths from Englishman, who finished better than Celtic Lad to beat him by a length. Half-way down the running Mon Acre took charge, while Avnho and Galloping Acre challenged Mon Acre had little trouble to hold the lead and score by a length and a-half from Aynho, with Galloping Acre threequarters of a length away third. From a KC'od start Stretto was _the first to become prominent from Sinking Fund, Jewelled Girdle, Rona Bay, Kilonsa, Kelly, Round Up, Scotland and Jonathan. Rona Bay soon ran to the front and made play from Sinking Fund, Jewelled Girdle, Stretto. Kilonsa, Scotland, Round Up, Day Wind and Jonathan. After the field had travelled two furlongs Rulette, Sir Abb were together in front from Land Girl, Lornacre, Trilliarch and Paso Robles. Crossing the top Rulette and Sir Abb were still in charge from Lornacre, Trilliarch, Land Girl, Albv, Princo Rangi and Paso Robles. Once into tho straight the leaders tired and Lornacre took charge only to be challenged by Alby and Paso Robles with Star Artist moving up from the back. In a good finish Paso Robles stayed on to beat the fast-finishing Star Artist by a neck, with Alby a head away third.
