KAIN IN MOST PLACES COOLER TEMPERATURES The weather report and forecast for New Zealand issued by the Government meteorologist last evening were as follows: —An extensive and rather irregular depression still covers the Tasmaa Sea, while the rise of pressure over (south-eastern Australia has been slight. The forecast is for northerly winds prevailing at first except in the far south, but a change to southerlies or southeasterlies extending over most of the South Island, force mainly light to moderate, but squally at times about and south of Cook Strait. Seas rather rouch to rough at times in the Cook and Foveaux Strait areas and on the west coast of the South Island, otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Variable winds with northerlies predominating in the central and northern portions, but a change to southerlies advancing from the west; seas moderate but increasing. The weather is likely to be unsettled and rain is probable in most districts and heavy in places, especially over the South Island, with mist or fog in many places. Temperatures becoming somewhat cooler. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST WARM AND UNSETTLED The Government meteorologist Issued to the Hebald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Light to moderate and variable winds, northerlies prevailing at first but turning to west or south-west on Monday. The weather is likely to become unsettled and some rain is probable. Temperatures warm. Seas slight to moderate. WEEK-END WEATHER Auckland.—The weather over the week-end was fine and very warm. The wind was very light and varied from east to north-west. The sun shone brightly on both days, the maximum temperature being 82 degrees and the minimum 71 degrees. The barometer fell slowly until last evening, when it commenced a gradual recovery.

Wellington.—Saturday was misty and overcast with an occasional light drizzle. After a temporary improvement steady rain set in about 5 p.m. and continued until about 10 p.m. The sky then gradually cleared and Sunday morninz was fine'. In the afternoon, however, it again clouded over and rain set in before 2 p.m. A squally north wind prevailed on Saturday. It was strong, hut during Sunday it decreased. The minimuni temperature on Saturday morning was 66.1 degrees and the maximum 69.2 degrees. Oil Sunday morning the minimum temi>erature was 66.1 decrees and the maximum 74.0 degrees. The barometer registered 2£K69in. Christchurch. —Warm and dull wSatlier prevailed over the week-end. Saturday morning was sunny, but the sky clouded in the afternoon. There was. a moderate north-easterly breeze and the maximum temperature was 72.2 decrees. After a dull morning rain fell on Sunday afternoon, but the weather sgpn cleared again, and was sultry, A strong wind blew from the north-east and the barometer at 5 p.m. was' steady at 29.70 in . -

Dunedin.—-The weather on Saturday was lino with intermittent sunshine and the temperature reached a maximum of 75 degrees. The barometer, after falling to 29.60 in., rose to 29.75 in., and there was a slight breeze from the southwest in tho afternoon. . Sunday was overcast and mild with a slight breeze from the north-east. The maximum temperature was 68 degrees and the barometer remained steady at 29.80 in.
