MAORI GIRL'S EFFORT CARNIVAL AT HAMILTON SOUTH AUCKLAND TITLES [by TELEGRAPH—OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday The South Auckland swimming titles were decided at the Hamilton Municipal Baths last evening. A successful attempt to lower the New Zealand 50yds junior girls' backstroke record was made by Miss Nawi Kira, the brilliant young Rotorua swimmer. Miss Kira's time for the distance was 37 2-ss, tiiis being 2-5s faster than the previous record. Ajiother feature of the programme was exhibition diving by D. ANNUAL HARBOUR RACE WAITEMATA CLUB'S EVENT Favoured by warming sunshine and a calm soa, the largest entry of swimmers in a harbour race this season Btarted olf the Orakei Wharf on Saturday afternoon when the Waitemata Amateur Swimming and Lifesaving Club's annual mile and a-half race was held. Fully two-thirds of the entrants were on the starting line and 20 swimmers left the staging-. With the exception of two, one woman and one man, all finished, and the times recorded on tho whole wore good. The course was from the Orakei Wharf to a black buoy off the second bridge on the waterfront road and thence to tho Royal Akarana Yacht Club. P. Mathieson swam very strongly for tho first quarter mile, but, when half the distance had been covered, Miss Ludlow was pulling up well and swimming poworfully, with A. Litchfield close behind. Miss Kuypers was following closely and the limit entrants, Miss Rolton and Miss Atkinson, were following in that order. Three hundreds yards off the finishing mark; the swimmers were well separated. After an excellent race P. Mathieson came in first to register also fastest time. Three yards behind him was L. McCready and five yards after' him F. Taylor, of the Waitemata Club. The rcßult was:—P.
