PLAY AT BOTOKUA , ; HOME TEAM'S FIRST LOSS INTERESTING STAGE REACHED [by TELEGIIAI'H —OWN CORUESrONDENT] < ROTORUA, Wednesday A continuation of ideal weather enabled to-day's three rounds of the Hotorua Bowling.. Club's open pairs tournament to be played under the best conditions,, and the matches were very keenly contested. The Rotorua pair, Fakes and French, which up to the, end of Tuesday's rounds was the only team unbeaten, lost to Auckland (Dadlev), in the eighth round. The day's play also lessened the chances of Sykos (Otahuhu) and Tvndall (St. Heliers), who were the two finalists last year. The greens were fu.stcr to-day than (hey had been since the opening of the tournament and the play was generally of a higher standard than was displayed earlier. At the close of the ninth round the number of wins which will qualify for post-section play largely depends upon the result of the two games to be played to-morrow by Hoskings and Donaldson (Grey Lynn), who have six wins and two losses, and Mephan's (Taumarunui) success in his lust game. Although he won tho gaino against "West End (Hopwood) fairly comfortably, Pakes (Rotorua) had to submit to defeat in tho second round of the day's play when ho met Dadley (Auckland), who, together with his lead, Waitc, was playing excellent bowls. Budd and .McDowell, who are representing (he home club in section B, went through the three games without defeat and lead in their section with eight wins and only one loss. Mephan (Tauniarunui) suffered another loss to-day when pluying Onehunga (Sims), but is still leading in the section with seven wins and one match to play. In the afternoon Maxwell Walker comfortably defeated Tyndall (St. Heliers), while Harper (Otahuhu). the title-holder, faded out of tho picture when beaten by Claughton and Bennett (Hastings).
