COMFORT ON RAILWAY

EXPERIMENTS IN BRITAIN CLICKING OF THE WHEELS [from OUR OWN COHRKSI'ONIIKNT] LONDON, Jan. 'JU Experiments nre in progress on the English railways and London underground of laying section,s of "continuous" rails, with tin; object of reducing the frequency of the clicking noise which occurs whenever train wheels pass over rail joints. At the beginning of the present century, rails were .'!0 to 45 feet in length. Some years ago they were standardised at GO feet. Last year, however, one English railway company laid some rails measuring 120 feet, and also converted a considerable mileage of existing main-line track to 180 feet lengths by welding. Experiments on a much larger scale have now started, rails being welded to a continuous length of 1260 feet. These make I'or very smooth riding, and the joints are sufficiently few and far between to render noisa negligible.

The "continuous" rail lias so far proved highly successful, and its wider development in tho near future is to he expected.
