THE TIGER SHARK
NOT A SPORTING FISH RECENT TAURANGA CATCH {by telegraph—own correspondent] J2UNEDIN, Mondav The performance of the Rotorua fisherman who caught a tiger shark •weighing 9531b. off Tauranga has not caused feelings'of envy among sportsmen who. visit deep-sea fishing grounds. A Dunedip sportsman states that the explanation lies in the fact that the tiger shark is not classed by Bay cf Islands fishing clubs as, a sporting fish. When it is hooked it sulks and refuses to rise from the surface of the water. «. t The fact that the landing of the tiger shark required an hour and 10 minutes was noi considered worthy of notice, since a' striped marlin or mako shark weighing only 2501b. could be expected to provide at least two and a-half hours' sport,' leaping frequently 12 or 15ft. into .the airl '' - .
Tiger sharks weighing' much more than 9531b. are known to be numerous and the weight of the specimen landed appears "less remarkable tthe# it called that a makoWeighing 7981b. was landed by Mr. White Wickham, of London, and that another Englishman, Mr. .Wit J. Dowding, landed a thresher shark weighing 9221b. Both of the latter are definitely classed as sporting fish and were landed only after long #ncl exciting battles.
