TAKAPUNA WATER SUPPLY

Sir,—Tt would appear that the Wairau Creek is to be diverted with a view to augment the water supply from Lake Pupuke. Years ago this creek was condemned as an unfit source for drinking water because of its contamination by drainage from land where cattle graze. Judging by verdicts given in the past, such a supply of water i« not likely to be wholesome in the present. And now a reason—or rather an apology—for the use of tho creek water is the extraordinary one that there are organisms in the creek that will destroy other objectionable organisms now in the lake itself. And another -jreason put forward—apparently the determining one—is that the Wairau scheme is the cheapest one. But is not impure water dear at any price? Birkenhead has now a water supply from the .Waitakere Hills, filtered and wholesome. If one part of the North Shore can have clean water, why not another? Can nothing be done to teach the majority of our ratepayers common sense? Takafuna Ratepayer.
