CENTENNIAL PLANS

NORTHLAND INTERESTS PRESERVING OF IDENTITY [from our own correspondent] W<?IAX G A REI. Monti iy The Whangarei County Council was faced at its meeting with the question of which scheme it- was to support, that of a court at the Centennial Exhibition for the whole of the Auckland Province, or one for the North Auckland area. The question was raised when communications were received from the Auckland Centennial Committee and the provisional Northland committee. The Auckland committee requested that the council appoint a delegate to attend a meeting, while the Northland 'committee reported that arrangements had been made for the filming of the scenic and sporting attractions and the agricultural- and industrial potentialities of the area. The chairman, Mr. J. A. S. McKay, said he did not think that the council should get too much involved with the Auckland committee. There would naturally be functions in the North, and the council would have to bear its share of such expenditure. It was finally decided that the chairman should attend the Auckland committee's meeting and, after further knowledge of the position has been gained, the council will decide on its future action. Councillors were of the opinion that the North should combine and suitably celebrate some event in its own history. Outstanding events in the early history of New Zealand took place in the North, and the area sluiuld not sink its identity in the larger area of the Auckland Province.
