HIKURANGI COAL

DECREASING OUTPUT SUPPLIES FROM OUTSIDE [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, MonJiy With the exhaustion of the readily available deposits, the number of small coal mines worked in the vicinity of Hikurangi is steadily decreasing. The latest to go out of existence was that operated for a number of years by Messrs. MeKinlay Brothers. Extensive borings proved that there were no workable supplies near the old mine, which has now been abandoned. Until a few years ago the Hikurangi mines were supplying coal for all this district's wants and exporting a considerable quantity each year, but now, partly through Hooding of the mines and other causes, the output of coal lias dropped to such an extent that coal has to be shipped here. The Union Steam Ship Company's Karepo is at present discharging Westport coal at Port Whangarei for the Railway Department.
