CRISIS IN EUROPE " Europe was in the grip of a grare> political crisis half a century ago, as\ can be seen from the following extract from the New Zealaxd Hebald of February 13, 1888: — "The European situation is causing great excitement. "1 he complications which have now arisen are considered to bo more ominous than those of any previous crisis. Lord Salisbury, in?, a speech in th' 3 House of Lords, said that the Government intended to uphold the policy aud interests in South-Eastern Europe which had always been advocated by England. The only danger was that-Russia would resort to adventurous and.illegal action, but he had it on specific authority that Russia would abstain from any illegality. He attached great value to the assurances of the Power that i>eace would be maintained. ( "The ,Italian fleet is being placed in
