ROWING REGATTA

THE AUCKLAND MEET IN (3 EXCURSION IN AID OF FUNDS One of the biggest sporting events of the season in Auckland—the annual regatta under the control of the Auckland Rowing Association—was in danger of cancellation this year until a method of raising the necessary money for prizes was decided upon. A moonlight excursion will be held on Wednesday evening to enable the association to put on tha meeting. The S.S. Duchoss has been commissioned. Until two yuars ago the Auckland regatta, which included the provincial champianships, vras held on the Whau Estuary but. owing to certain difficulties arising out of the location, iast-minute arrangements wero made last season to hold the events along the Tamaki Drive course. A full class of races for eights was successfully attempted, ~Jt" being felt that something progressive should be dona as the occasion was tho 50th anniversary of the association. Mr. C. G. Herdman, chairman of the association last year, was the prime mover in the step toward including eight-oar rowing on such a large scale in the programme. A decision made recently fixed the date of the Auckland regatta for April 2. The Whau Estuary was inspected and considered unsuitable. The waterfront drive course will in all protyibility be used. As yet no decision has been made regarding the events to be included. Whether a full clas« for eights will be contested is still a matter for consideration.
