THE MILK COUNCIL

POSITION OF CHAIBMAN

MR. GOLDSTINE RE-ELECTED

A QUESTION OF VOTING

A contest took place yesterday for the position of chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council. Last year's chairman, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, was re-elected, five votes being cast in his favour and three for the other candidate, Mr. E. F. Andrews, one of the City Council representatives, who also contested last year's election, when Mr. Goldstine was returned by five votes to four. The council normally consists of , nine members, but Mr. C. L. Smith recently resigned. Last year he voted for Mr. Goldstine.

Mr. Andrews was nominated by Mr. N. V. Douglas, the proposal being seconded by Mr. A. Rosser. The nomination of Mr. Goldstine was made by Mr. R. H. Ockleston and seconded by Mr. H. F. W Meikle. The voting resulted as follows:—For Mr. Goldstine: Messrs. It. S. Smith. J. Haslam, Meikle, Ockleston and Goldstine. For Mr. Andrews: Messrs. Rosser, Douglas and Andrews. Voting for Mr. Andrews was held first and Mr Andrews voted in' his own favour. When for Mr. Goldstine was taken Mr. Goldstine said he would refrain from voting for himself, but Air. Andrews stated that he had cast his vote only because at last year's election both candidates had voted for themselves, and Mr. Goldstine thereupon stated that he would conform with this practice and record his vote.

Both Mr. Andrews and Mr. Roaser assured the chairman of their support. Mr. Rosser said the fact that he had seconded the nomination of Mr. Andrews was not to be taken as an indication that he had lost his faith in the sitting chairman. Th'e consumers' representatives, however, had a principle before them and by acting as they had, they had. carried out that principle. In his year of office Mr. Goldstine had shown himself to be an efficient chairman: and the annual report ! demonstrated the success of his works. Other ':members associated themselves with these views. . Mr. Goldstine expressed the view that the council would continue to work, .harmoniously Threeparties, the producers,, vendors.-and ppnsumers were represented on .the council and it was the task of the' council to deal equitably with every interest affected. -r The .chairman's remuneration was again fixed at £250 a year. Mr. Meikle was subsequently elected vice-chairman, the election being held in committee. '

SPECIAL ELECTION

VACAN CY ON COUNCIL MEMBER'S RESIGNATION An election is to be held by the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council on March 8 to fill the vacantly caused by the resignation of Mr. C. L. Smith, one of the producers' representatives. The rolls will close ou February 21 and nominations must be in by February 25. The reasons for Mr. Smith's resignation have not yet been made public, and Mi*. Smith stated yesterday that he considered it was the responsibility of the council to make them public. He had expected his letter of resignation to be dealt with by the board in open meeting yesterday and he thought such. a step should be taken before arrangements were made for filling hisplace; It was stated by the chairman of the council, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, and the secretary, Mr. N. R l . Chapman, that under the council's empowering Act such a step was not necessary. A vacancy was created as soon as a member sent in his resignation. Mr. Smith resigned after the last meeting a week ago and he stated on Wednesday that he expected it to be dealt with at the next open meeting. Such a meeting was held yesterday, but it consisted solely of business relating to the annual report and the election of a chairman. A committee meeting, arranged before Mr. Smith's resignation, was then held and the matter was dealt with in committee only because, it was stated, the meeting had been arranged as a committee meeting. The minutes of this meeting will be placed before the council at its next open meeting.
