OBITUARY

MR. JOSEPH TREADWELL

WELLSFORD NONAGENARIAN

After having been in business as a blacksmith and wheelwright at Port Albert for over 60 years, Mr. Joseph Tread well died yesterday at the homo of it is daughter, Mrs. F. Palmer, Wellslord, in his 05th year. Mr. Tread well worked regularly until ho was over 90 years of age, and remained engaged 'in light work up until three weeks ago, when illness developed. Born in Berkshire, England, Mr. Tread well came to New Zealand; in 1874 as a young married man with two children. He settled at Port Albert and immediately entered the same tj j>e of business with which he "had been associated in England. His first wife, who was Miss Elizabeth Legge, died a few years later, and in 188.'} Mr. Tread well married Miss Clara Buckton, who predeceased him by 10 years. Ten of a family of 12 children are still living in various parts of New Zealand, there being three sons. There are a number of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

MR. 0. H. LESTER The death has occurred of an old Auckland resident, Mr. George Herbert Lester, of Green Lane, Remuera. Born in 1858 in Leicester, England, Mr. Lester arrived at Auckland with his parents in 1862 by the ship Matilda Wattenbnch, in company with other Albertland settlers. After a brief residence in Auckland the family bought a farm in what was known afterward as Wellsford, where for 14 years Mr. Lester and his four brothers assisted their parents, as well as trading with tho cutter Fearless on Kaipara Harbour and alon»; the Wairoa River. Mr. Lester and his brother, Mr. R. E. Lester, returned to Auckland and went into business in Pitt Street and later joined another brother, Mr. A. N. Lester, in a business known as the Rainbow Arcade, in Newton mid Queen Street. He was for a time at Kohnkolni, Hokianga, and then came to Auckland and conducted a general store for <35 years. Mr. Lester is survived by two daughters, his wife having predeceased him eight years ago.

MR. O. H. MOLLER The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Odin Henry Moller, at tho age of 70, stated a Press Association message from Hastings. Mr. Moller was born in Dtinedin and was educated at the Otago Boys' High School. He occupied a high position in the Masonic Grand Lodge, being Provincial Grand Master of Otago in 1922-23. For many years ho was viceconsul for Denmark and was knighted Bidder of Danebrog in 1927. A volunteer for ,30 years, Mr. Moller held the rank of major in the 4th Otago Regiment and commanded Group 13 during the war. In 1920 lie retired from his military duties and received the M.B.E. Mr. Moller was a member of the firm of C. Moller and Sons, manufacturing jewellers. He was a director of tho Caledonian Society of Otago, secretary and vice-president of tho Otago Cycling Club, and took a keen interest in outdoor sports.

MRS. F. A. OLARKE The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Clara Louisa Clnrkcj 73 years* f V of Mr. F. A. , Clarke, of 128 Richmond Road, Ponsonby. Born in Staffordshire, Mrs. Clarke was the youngest daughter of Mr. David Hipkins who, with iiis family, came to N'ew Zealand in ,1890. Mrs. Clarke was married in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 1902. Mrs. Clarke was weil known in musical circles. She is survived by her husband, one daughter and three sons.

DR. JAMES BYRNE Private advice received in Auckland last night announced the death of Dr. James Byrne, Bishop of Toowoomba, Queensland.
