TIMBER FOR PULPING
MATAKANA ISLAND SUPPLY

An announcement has been made that negotiations have been finalised between the directors of ..Whakatane Paper Mills, Limited, and Mr. W. B. Faulkner, chairman of directors of the Australian company which owns 7000 acres of pine plantations on Matakana Island, for the purchase of over 100,000 tons of timber, which will be used for the manufacture of paper pulp at the mills at Whakatane, which are, now almost completed. t
Work is to commence immediately on the erection of a wharf at the island, for the loading of the timber for transport to Wl;\katane. A railway about 15 miles in length through the centre of the island, is bein'g built for the hauling of timber to ths wharf. Caterpillar tractors will be used for hauling logs from the bush to depots along the route to be cut into lengths suitable for pulping.
