TRANSPORT LICENSING
SOUTH AUCKLAND CARRIERS AMALGAMATION SUGGESTED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE KT7ITI, Friday A suggestion that the Te Kuiti Carriers'v Association should amalgamate with the Te Awamutu Association was made by the No. 1 District Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan. at a sitting to-day. He said that one association should be sufficient to control the activities of the whole of the South Auckland portion of the district and one association would bo sufficient to control the northern portion. •
Mr. Phelan also stated that a standard price would be Bet for the whole of tho No. 1 area, exempted areas would be abolished and compulsory membership of associations would be insisted upon. Fears that dairy company lorries would encroach upon the business of private operators was expressed by Mr. K. W. Low, representing the Te Kuiti Carriers' Association.
Mr. Law said the Piopio Dairy Company previously had carting (ir.ic by contract in spite of the increased rate; The contractor declined to carry on because of increased costs and the company was forced to take over the service. The Aria Dairy Company had been restricted in its cartage rights by the previous licence. The granting of general goods service licences was not opposed, upon both companies agreeing to work with tho Carriers' Association and refrain from competing with private operators.
