NEW RECORDS MADE BOOT'S GREAT EFFORT HOLMES WINS 220 YARDS AUSTRALIAN GIEL'S FEAT By Telegraph—Press Association Copyright (Received February 7, 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 7 Perfect weather prevailed for the gecond day of the Empire Games and again a number of records was broken. °V. P. Boot (New Zealand) ran another great race in the final of the 880 yards. Taking things quietly behind the leaders, he swept to the front at the opportune moment and won in good style. ' Th§ men's 220 yards event saw the record successively lowered. The Games' record stood at 2}.Bs. Mumford (Australia), in the first heat, and Best (Australia), in the third, reduced it to 21.6 i. Roberts (England), in the fourth heat, brought it to 21.55. The first semi-final saw O'Connor (Canada) equal 21.55, but Holmes (England), in the second semi-final, cut it to 21.35. Miss Young, the Western Australian girl, is the first competitor to secure two victories and also Australia's only successes so far. She won the 100 yards in great style on Saturday and to-day her performance in the broad jump produced a Games and Australian record. She was also largely responsible for Australia's win in the women's 440 jards relay. A select field of 14 started in a gruelling marathon,; which, apart from three laps of the cricket ground, was run over hard roads. Only nine runners finished.
