FATAL COLLISION

UNION SECRETARY KILLED CREAM LORRY STRIKES CAR [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WAIR OA, Friday A fatal accident occurred about two miles from Wairoa on the Wairoa-Gis-borno highway about 11.30 a.m. today. The victim was: Mr, Eru Brown, of.Manutuke, a Maori, aged about 35. secretary of the Poverty Bay Shearers' "Union. Mr. Brown, accompanied by his brother, Mr. George Brown, a wellknown Gisborne footballer, another Maori, Mr. Hori Awarau, aged 78, single, of Muriwai, near Gisborne, and an elderly Maori woman, was proceeding to Wairoa for the races in a sedan car. Oil a bend in the road the car collided with a cream lorry, and the right-hand side was torn away. Mr. Eru Brown, who was driving, was thrown on to the road. He was dead when picked up. Mr. Awarau suffered slight abrasions and was admitted to the Wairoa Hospital, but was subsequently discharged. The others escaped injury.

A fatal accident occurred near Macandrew Bay last night, when a motorcycle skidded on the Portobello Road, throwing the rider and his passenger to the ground.

The victims were: — John Michael Davis Bayne, aged 19, of Macandrew Bay, who died in hospital. Clifford Hitehcox, aged 18, of Wa verify, who suffered concussion.

The accident took place about 7.30 p.m. and the two victims were admitted to the Dunedin Public Hospital threequarters of an hour later. The rider, Bayne, who was suffering from a dislocated thigh, shock, abrasions and injuries to his chest, died about three hours alter.
