ANNUAL REGATTA

EVENTS AT NORTHCOTE FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS LENGTHY PROGRAMME DECIDED The sailing events of the annual regatta promoted by residents of Northcote and Birkenhead were held on Saturday afternoon in favourable weather. A fresh northerly breeze prevailed and the sea was comparatively calm with a heavy swell down harbour. Several mishaps occurred to the smaller craft, due chiefly to carrying too much sail in the fresh northerly. A naval whaler wont to the assistance of a capsized yacht off St. Mary's Bay. Another yacht, whose mast carried away near the same locality, was towed away by a larger yacht, and the crew of the upturned yacht Maumau in midharbour were taken aboard the vehicular ferry Sparrowhawk. Other boats in trouble off Northcote Point and down-harbour were assisted by Mr. N. J. Campbell's launch itaira, Mr. E. C. Fowler's launch Huawai, Mr. A. L. Ellis' launch Little Princess, and the Auckland Harbour Board's tug Te Banraki. These launches acted as tenders to the flagship. Representatives of affiliated clubs were welcomed on the flagship by the chairman of the regatta committee, Mr. C. J. W. Taylor, and afternoon tea was served by the ladies' committee. The president, Captain H. H. Sergeant, harbourmaster, sent a message expressing regret at missing the regatta for tho first time. NAVAL WHALERS The programme opened with the naval whalers' race for the championship flag. Of the seven entrants, the 13th Battery. Royal New Zealand Artillery, boat was first away, followed by the second whaler of H.M.S. Endeavour, the third of H.M.S. Philomel, and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve boat. The Philomel's first whaler drifted over the starting line too soon, and was delayed two minutes through having to return. The race started at 2.30 p.m. The finishing times were:—R.N.V.R. No. 1, 3h 35m ss; H.M.S. Philomel No. 1, 3h 36m 48s; •R.N.Z. Artillery, 3h 37m 41s; H.M.S. Philomel, No. 2, 3h 39m 58s; H.M.S. Endeavour, No. 2, 3h 39m 58s.

KEEL YACHTS From the start of the race for C and E classes, the Konini shot ahead, followed by Dolphin, Speedwell and Mahoe. Corsair was recalled by the starting referee, and under the misapprehension that there had been a false start, Konini also put back. Mahoe, Spoedwell and Waitomi were now ahead of Konini and Corsair, and lona was nearly three minutes late. Speedwell carried away a cross-tree at the Bastion. Konini and lona made a great race, overhauling the others and Konini beat lona by less than half a minute.

THE MULLET BOATS The race for the H class was disappointing. Only three boats entered and all started late, Starlight one minute, Corona four minutes, and Celox eight minutes. Starlight increased her lead all the way. the other two boats finishing together. Komuri and Winifred in the next bunch, followed by Marika, Waialae, Lorna and Valkyrie. Macnshla was ten minutes late. Isobelle took the lead, but was gradually replaced by her other competitors, and a good finish to a keen race was fought between Vamarie and Tamariki, the former beating the scratch boat by 13 seconds. SMALLER CLASSES In the combined race for M and V classes no representative of the M boats entered. The order of tho start was Meteor. Shamrock, Arline, Paroro, Surprise, Leveret, Marianne, Mamaru, Memutu, Charmaine, Avian, Hawk and Limerick. A keen race ensued, 13 competitors displaying good seamanship. Hawk and Limerick eventually took the lead, tho former reaching the finishing lino with over a minute to spare. The race started at 2.50 p.m. Tho finishing times were:—Hawk (3m), 4b 23m 28s; Limerick (scr), 4h 2-1 m 20s; Shamrock (lVaOi), <ih 2.1 m 275; Paroro (sm), 4h 20m 475; Memutu (4m), 4h 29m 3s; Surprise (sm), 4h 29m 38s; Meteor (6m). 4h 31m 15s; Arline (4m), 4h 31m 345; Charmaine (4m), 4h 31m 38s; Mamaru (4m), 4h 32m 9s; Avian (8m), 4h 35m 15s; Leverette (8m), 4h 44m 245; Marianne (6m), 4h 45m 41s. Marlene, Sirona, Sonoma, Seymour, Maliana and Annette all got away well together in that order, with Aotea late.
