RAIN SLOWS DEMAND LARGE QUANTITIES .OF FRUIT Fruit sales at yesterday's markets were depressed, owing to the wet weather. Large quantities were available, but the demand was weak and prices were low accordingly. Apples and pears in particular were slow in selling. There are large stocks, of Bon Chretien pears arriving, but they ure fetching poor prices. Gravensteins were also cheap, only choice, highly-coloured fruit being wanted. There are fair quantities of field mushrooms to hand, and they are meeting with a brisk demand. Fear of brown rot developing caused the demand for peaches, plums and nectarines to be very poor. Greengages from Otago are arriving in good quantities. Lemons were down, and tomatoes were still slow of sale, although prices improved a little. Oranges were slow of sul,e. There was little demand for hothouse grapes. Unexpectedly large supplies of raspberries were available, and prices were fairly low. The Niagara will arrive on Monday with her Usual shipment of Fiji bananas. There were heavy supplies of potatoes and prices were lower.;. Good quality celery sold well. New season's kiuharas brought lower prices, being to hand in large stocks. Pumpkins are still a glut on the market. Ample supplies of cabbage, cauliflower, peas ' and beans were available. Lettuce realised high prices. * There was a fair demand for poultry, which was in medium supply. Prices for heavy hens were a little better, but other lines were unaltered. Sowing was much earlier than usual and the crops generally got a very good start and were a good height before tlip hot, dry conditions prevailed. As a result they were not retarded, except in a few* localities where tlie ground is stony. The crops are cobbing well and should ripen very early. The yields are expected to be considerably above the average of the last few years. BRADFORD MARKET LONDON, Feb. 3 The Bradford market is steady with a firmer tendency. Business is small.
