Beware of Insect Pests

Young tender shoots of chrysanthemums seem to be particularly attractive to insect pests. Should earwigs be troublesome, traps set in the form of inverted pots filled with hay, or an empty matchbox left partly open will trap many. These traps should be examined every morning and the insects destroyed. Most of the other insect pests are winged, and the best preventive in their case is to keep the foliage'-more or less bitter by periodical spraying with nicotine. Weak soot water sprayed dver the plants in the evenings of hot days will assist, not only through its ammonia content, but by helping to keap undesirable company away.
