TELEGRAMS AND RADIO

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE NEW ZEALAND INTERESTS [BY TEIiEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Friday An international conference to discuss telegraph, radio and telephone questions was commenced at Cairo on February 1, stated the PostmasterGeneral, the Hon. F. Jones, to-night. The New Zealand delegate is Sir. M. B. Esson, formerly second assistantsecretary to the Post and Telegraph Department and at present New Zealand representative in London on the Imperial Communications Advisory Committee.

"The proposals set down for discussion at the conference cover a variety of subjects," said Mr. Jones, "and it is anticipated that they will occupy the attention of the delegates for about two mouths. As regards the telegraph service, the most important proposals are those of various administrations regarding the adoption of a uniform rate for overseas telegrams. "Considerable discussion is expected ou the question of the redistribution and use of the frequency bands allocated to radio services. Owing to the rapid growth of radio communication, there is congestion in Europe and America on certain frequency bands, particularly those at present available for short-wave broadcasting, and a reallocation of frequencies has become a matter of urgency. "In this connection any proposals which may cause additional sources of interference with New Zealand services will be watched by the Dominion delegate."
