CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WORK DURING PAST YEAR VIGILANCE OF COMMITTEES A slight decrease in total membership, with an increase in senior members, was recorded in the annual report of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, which was tabled at a meeting of the council yesterday. Senior membership, at 537, was the highest for six years, but junior membership, at 103, did not reach tho 1936 level. The total membership was 645, compared with 657 the previous year. The improvement in economic conditions during 1937, although substantial, was not sufficient to permit any considerable relaxation in the vigilance of the various committees of the chamber, more especially in view of the change In Government at the end of 1935 and the consequent far-reaching alterations in conditions of trading and production, the report stated. The council and executive had accordingly met at frequent intervals during the year. The Associated Chambers of Commerce continued to bo an active force, which was carrying through a great deal of valuable work on behalf of the coirtmercial community. It was also able to perform a considerable amount of service for individual chambers. The report added that the past year had seen the adoption of many reforms and innovations which the Auckland chamber had used its efforts to secure —in somo cases over a period of years, either alone or in conjunction with other organisations. In addition many matters had been ventilated through tho chamber either with a view to directing the thoughts of the public to the problems involved, to .informing members of the commercial community of their obligations in the3e matters, or in . the hope of securing official redress of grievances.
