MEAT QUOTAS

x EXPORTS TO BRITAIN INCREASE FOR QUARTER CHILLED BEEP EXPANSION A VALUABLE INDUSTRY [BY TEIjEGKAPH—FBESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Friday "The quota of imports of New Zealand chilled beef into the United Kingdom is to bo increased by over 50 per cent for tho April to Juno Quarter, 1938," stated the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, to-day. "Frozen boef and veal are also to be considerably increased. The provisional programme of beef imports to the United Kingdom for the second quarter of 1938 was accordingly very satisfactory to New Zealand." Tho figures for the April to June quarter this year, with the figures for the corresponding quarter of 1937, aro: ~~ 1038 1937 Cwt. Cwt. Chilled bee? .. 150,000 08,000 Frozen beef .. 180,000 1.46,000 Veal . . .. 30,000 27,000 Offals .. . • 10,000 4,000 Total .. .. 370,000 205,000 Tho allocations for all types of beef are the same as New Zealand's estimates for the quarter and represent in total nearly 40 per cent more than the arrivals for the corresponding quarter last year. Tho increase, particularly that for chilled beef, represents part of the results of the arrangement agreed upon in Mr. Nash's discussions with tho British Government. "On tho evidence," said Mr. Nash, "it appears that the Dominion will obtain a market in the United Kingdom for all chilled beef which it can produce and reports on quality are so good that the industry is one of the most promising for the fuller utilisation of our pastures."

POPULAR PRODUCT STRIKING PROGRESS MADE BENEFIT TO NORTH ISLAND PRESENT YEAR STARTS WELL In the last few years New Zealand's chilled beef export trade has shown remarkable expansion, the produet having won rapid popularity on the United Kingdom market since its introduction. This development has been of particular importance to North Island pastoralists, who hold a practical monopoly of the industry. The growth of the chilled beef export trade in the last three years is shown by the fact that whereas in the 1935-36 export season 139,747 quarters were shipped, in the 1936-37 season the total was 194,891. Already in the first three and a-half months of the current season exports have increased by over 4000 quarters to 48,294, compared with 44,111 quarters for the same period last season. AUSTRALIAN FIGURES PROVISIONAL APPROVAL (Received January 28, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 27 The International Beef Conference has provisionally approved the following import figures for Australia for tho second quarter of 1938, subject to reconsideration in March: —Chilled beef, 223,700cwt.; frozen beef, 418,900cwt.
