As is often the case with him, ho made a tangle at the start but he was soon handily placed on the rails. What appeared to be a good position turned out to be a very effective pocket and, while Lucky Jack was going comfortably, he could never get out to challenge the pacemakers. He will be given a chance to make amends in tho Au Revoir Handicap to-morrow.

Satin King, who three years ago was 0110 of tho best pacers in New Zealand, but who broke down, showed signs of a return to form by beating all'but Guy Junior in tho Flying Handicap. He paced solidly all the way and .pulled up apparently sound. _ .... 4 One of the disappointments of the first day was Plutus, whoso fine record during the season entitled him to be' favourite, yet he was only fourth choice in a field of eight and could only finish fifth. In tho Außevoir Handicap he was second choice and finished at a rate that suggested another victory is not far off • < Willow Wave won tho Dunedin Cud like a good racehorse. In the early stages the field dawdled along and the first mile occupied 2.20 3-5. Ho won very easily and would have won uuder any conditions. He is racing much more solidly than previously and now on a 4.21 mark he is within 12 yards of Indianapolis, Roi I'Or and Lawn Derby, j Peggotty, after three starts, is still unbeaten and her form on the opening day at Forbury Park suggests her winning sequence is not completed. She was the only one to go the journey without a mistake and she will have another great' chance in tho Crescent Handicap. Pilot' Peter may trouble her but he is. not altogether reliable.. Guy Junior, winner of the Flying Handicap, only recently joined M. Holmes' team and is a greatly improved pacer. His latest win flattered him, nevertheless, and under different conditions he probably would have been beaten by Lucky Jack. Two wins, a second and a tmrc\ with four horses was M. Holmes' good record for the day. ' . ' BAY OF PLENTY RACES AUTUMN MEETING PRIZES Prize-money totalling £3OOO has been allotted for tho Bay of Plenty Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Tauranga ou March 20 and 28. The allocation for the opening day is £I6OO, including £4OO attached to tho Tauranga Cup. For the maiden 1-1100 on each day there is also a sweepstake of £2 for starters. Tho programme is set out elsewhere in this issuo. PLANS FOR COURTCRAFT WAIKATO ENGAGEMENTS [I!Y TELEGRAPH—OWN CO II IIKS POND KNT ] PALMERSTOX NORTH. Friifay Mr. W. If. Gaisford has entered Courtcraft for the forthcoming Wnikato meeting, and will also enter him for the Herries Memorial Cup at lo Aroha. There is every intention of Courtcraft fulfilling these_ engagements, prior to leaving again for Australia. -
