CANTERBURY CRICKET
YOUNG TALENT LACKING OVERSEAS COACH NEEDED Three outright defeats, each of them suffered in matches which did not require the allotted four days, is the poorest record of a Canterbury Plunket Shield side for many a day. In themselves the defeats do not matter much, but their completeness draws attention to what appears to be a falling off in tho standard, and those who have the game at heart will be searching for ways of strengthening play in tho province, says a southern writer. It is certain that many will immediately criticise the one-day play in competition matches. They will be wide of the mark. The fact is that in this series Canterbury's seasoned players have failed, and there is not enough stability in the province's young talent. The folk who should do most thinking beforo the 1938-39 season are the members of the coaching committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association. The old trouble, lack of good bowling in grade games, remains a problem. Now tho batting has been found woefully wanting. It would appear that an overseas coach is needed again.
