She's just put through the whole family's wash and hung it out; but then she does that every week and it doesn't seem such a terrible labour. takes time and it needs care . . . but so does every other job about the house. That's just the point—washing under proper circumstances is neither more nor less irksome than other forms of housework. The "proper circumstances" are the modern appliances that science and industry have made available to every housekeeper. Without them life must be a drudgery. Vacuum cleaners, new kinds of mops and polishers, electric kitchens, califonts, lights, cooking utensils throughout the house, from floor to ceiling, in every room, science has relieved the housewife of a thousand tasks, and, more important still, has turned the necessary unavoidable labour into a healthy, normal exercise. It would be truer to say that science can do that, for conservatism still keeps many women in the awful bondage of neverending housework. You can,' for instance, spend Monday morning groping about in the dingy, steamy atmosphere of the old kind of wash-house ... a relic of another century and an altogether different conception of womanhood. Or you can spend an hour (if the wash is a big one) in the clean, hygienic surroundings of a modern wash-house. Linoleum floor, walls off-white relieved in blue or green, curtained windows . . . the place wouldn't be a bit unappetising to eat in. And, in place of the old damp and smelly wooden tubs, are smooth and graceful concrete tubs with polished zinc beading to protect the clothes. These take up so little space, and they are so clean and healthy. And the huge, ugly built-in "copper" . . . that's gone for ever, and in a corner of the room stands its successor —smeill, neat, tidy, clean and shining.
