AMOK WITH RIFLE
INDIAN SOLDIER SEIZED MEDAL AWARDED CAPTOR The bravery of an unarmed Indian soldier in tackling another Indian soldier who had run amok with a loaded rifle was recognised in the New Year Honours List. The Medal of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire has been awarded to Naik Barkat Singh, 10th Battalion, 2nd Punjab Regiment. On May 2, 1937, a sepoy ran amok at Meerut, shot dead the guard commander, mortally wounded another sepoy, and went off to the lines with his riflo loaded and bayonet fixed, shouting: "If any Hindu comes near me I will shoot him."
The man pursued Subadar Gopi Ram "with tho intention of killing him," says the London Gazette, "and on losing sight of this Indian officer he stood undecided for a moment, looking round him, ready to shoot."
Naik Barkat Singh seized the man and pinioned his arms. But for his prompt action further casualties would have occurred, and in all probability he saved the life of at least one other individual.
