ANNUAL TOURNAMENT THE SEMI-FINAL MATCHES LADIES' DOUBLES SURPRISE DEFEAT OF MISSES BEVERLEY Play in tho annual tournament of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association has reached the final stages and the programme will bo completed at the Stanley Street courts to-day. The featuro of yesterday's matches was the defeat of Misses N. and M. Beverley, of Matamata, holders of the Auckland ladies' title, by Misses M. Macfarlane and It. Taylor. The weather was again fine and the participants in tho prolonged matches found the heat rather trying. There was a large attendance of the public.

Chief . interest was centred in the genii-finals of the men's and ladies' singles. In the former A. D. Brown, Auckland, defeated N. G. Sturt, Auckland, by three sets to one, while it took D. C. Coombe. of Wellington, holder of tho New Zealand championship, fivo sots to eliminate N. F. Bedford, also of Wellington. The finalists in tho ladies' singles will be Misses M. Beverley, holder of the title, and B. Ij. Bishop. Their respective success Avero gained yesterday over Misses E. Plummer, of Wellington, and P. Cooke. ; • The various doubles matches were closely followed, and the meeting today between A. C. Stedman and D. C. Coombe and the men's title-holders, J. W. Gunn and N. G. Sturt, should be one of the highlights of the programme.

There were several keen and interesting matches in the other sections. 0. Satchell scored a notable win in straight sets over J. H. Moller, holder of the Auckland junior championship.
