DOMINION EXPERIMENTS INVESTIGATION OF COSTS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CO II It HSPONDI'.NT] Vf ELLIN (I TON, Friday Tlio possibilities of tho sugar boot industry in Now Zealand are being investigated by tho Department of Agriculture, which last year undertook large-scale experiments to obtain somo idea of the actual cost of production and to find out what processes were involved in cultivation under New Zealand conditions. Some very satisfactory yields were recorded. The costs of production varied considerably, depending largely on tho weather and the cost of the labour involved. In some districts skilled labour for thinning the crops was more readily available than in others. Tho actual production costs, exclusive of harvesting charges, ranged from about 14s to about £2 a ton of washed beet, and the department considers that with the information now available these costs could bp appreciably reduced. Nine experiments arc being carried out this year, including two in tho Hawke's Bay district, as tho department realises that to obtain definite information trials will have to bo carried out Over a period of years. "Our experiments have proved that we can grow sugar beet in New Zealand and that the climate is admirably suited for it," said Mr. J. W. Woodcock, crop experimentalist in tho Department of Agriculture. "What has to be ascertained is tho cost and labour involved in the actual growth of beet under farm conditions. Tho whole point in deciding whether tho sugar beet industry in New Zealand is worth going on with or not will depend, in addition to the agricultural side, on tho economics of manufacture, plus the possibility of obtaining a sufficient acreage of beet over a number of years to maintain a factory. That is a matter for tho Bureau of Industries to docide."

SOUTHDOWN RAM FAIR OFFERING AT CLAUDELANDS KEEN BIDDING LACKING [from OUlt OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday A lack of animated bidding marked the seventh annual Southdown ram fair, conducted by Messrs. Little interest was aroused by tho imported stud ram, Sandrinscham 11. of 1935, which was bred on the late King George V.'s estate at Sandringr ham, and which was offered on account of Sir. G. Salway, of Whatawhata. It was finally sold to Mr. P. McNauiihnon, of Morrinsvillo, for 30«ns. Twenty extra good one-shear mm? from Mr. A. L.
