SUSTENANCE MAUDS HEAVY FINES ALSO IMPOSED PENALTIES FOR FOUR MEN COURT WARNING NOT HEEDED Sentence to terms of imprisonment was passed by Mr. C. 1?. Orr Walker, S.M., on four men who were charged in the Police Court yesterday with false pretences by making false declarations of income to obtain sustenance from the Employment Promotion Fund. One accused was sent to gaol for six weeks, and the other three were each sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment. "This is a particularly bad case," said the magistrate, when George Frederick Timins, father of five dependent children, was charged in respect of 46 false statements, by which he obtained £BB 7s sd. Mr. W. A. Black, of tho Labour Department, said 21 of the declarations were made after the Court's warning last may that more severe punishment would bo meted out to offenders after that date. Earned Over £9 in Week "Accused has been in regular employment on tho waterfront, and ono week when ho declared his income as nil he actually earned £9 6s Bd," added Mr Black. Commenting on the many declarations made after the warning and up to November 15 last, the magistrate said accused had deliberately offended. Fines were imposed on the following offenders, charged with making fals<» statements: —Arthur Cheighton Stepl, £SO; James Hugh Duggan and Reginald Charles Dickens, £35 each; Harold George Svmoiuls, £25; John James Mitchell and John Steel. £lO each; John Lewis Gunning, James Phillip Hooks and Frederick Joseph Knaggs, £7 10s each; Walter Godfrey Archer, Leslie Valdemar Hansen and Michael O'Brien, £4 each. Costs, 10s, were also entered in each case.
