UNREST IN ABYSSINIA
HARASSING OF ITALIANS DENIAL ISSUED IN ROME LONDON, Jan. 26 The Abyssinian Legation in London has issued a statement that violent opposition and fighting are going on in north and north-west Abyssinia. The attempts of Italian flying and motorised columns to recapture lost positions have met with at the most only temporary success. Three battalions of Eritrean troops deserted, and 5993 Italians and Askaris have been killed in engagements in the past two months. The Abyssinian losses were equally as great. Abyssinians are masters of the situation in many districts. The statement alleges that following non-observance of certain pledges 18 Italian officers wero massacred at Debramarkos, capital of Gojam Province. From 30 to 40 Italian aeroplanes have since bombed towns and villages in the province each day as a reprisal. A message from Rome says official quarters there deny the story from the Abyssinian Legation in London. They point out that it coincides with the meeting of the League at Geneva and they regard it as a manoeuvre to win sympathy. They say Italy controls every part of Ethiopia.
