FIFTY YEARS AGO
WEST AUSTRALIA'S REQUEST Western Australia's demand 50 years ago for a responsible government of its own did not meet with favour, as it ivas felt that it would be unwise to place this large area of land under the control of a mere handful of colonists. The following is an extract from s leading article in the Xkw Zealand Herald of January 28. 1888: — "As appears from our cable messages the Secretary of State for the Colonies, speaking on behalf of the Imperial Government. declined the boon desired, on the grounds, among others, that it is not desirable to hand over such a vast tract of country to 40,000 people. "It may seem hard on the colonists of Western Australia tbat they are not granted the boon which lias been had for the asking by the other colonies, but there can be no doubt that thfl retention of the control of that vast territory in the hands of the Government is the wisest course that can b« taken.".
