TE AROHA AFFAIRS

HIERRIES PARK IMPROVEMENT TRACK TO BALD SPUR | [by telegraph—nwy coshespojcdextJ AROHA, Thursday A proposal for the improvement of Herries Park, Te Aroha, was received last night by the Borough Council from the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce. The proposal is that. a stopbank be erected along the river bank adjacent to the park to prevent flooding, enabling the area thus enclosed, which is at present useless, to be built tip. It would then .be possible to extend the playing areas and to establish a motor camp close to the centre ©f the town. The riverside park would also be a decided scenic advantage. The Mayor, Mr. It. Coulter, M.P., stated that a local engineer, Mr. W. J. Gibbs, had suggested an alternative scheme of cutting oil" a bend ifi the river to keep the flood waters from the park area. The question of finance: would prevent either scheme being undertaken in the immediate future, but on his suggestion the matter was referred to the Works Committee, who will discuss the scheme with Mr. Gibbs and the engineer who. drew up the plan put forward by the Chamber of Commerce.

It is hoped that some improvement will shortly be made to the track leading from the To Aroha Hot Springs Domain to the summit of the Bald Spur. The Mayor stated that he had received advice from an officer of the Labour Department that several men would shortly bo available iu Te Aroha and he had suggested that this work be taken iu. hand. A certain amount o! draining and regrading will probably be carried out.

Tin? Te Aroha Cemetery Board advised the council that there was a vacancy ou the board caused by the. retirement! of* Mr. J. B. Johnson, who has acted as a cemetery -trustee for the last 27 years. The council decided to.* nominate as his successor his son, Mr. James Johnsou.
