COMPULSION IN SCHOOLS BOARD'S REPRESENTATIONS [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday Urgent representations to the Government to make swimming a compulsory subject in the schools will bo made by the Canterbury Education Board, according to a decision reached at a meeting this morning. "Members agreed that action should be taken immediately, so as to take advantage of the summer months. Referring to the number of drowning fatalities during the holidays, Mr. C. S. Thompson said the board should use these fatalities" to press home to the authorities the need for compulsory swimming and life-saving training, and the need for shimming facilities in schools.
