DISCOVERY BY CHANCE MAN ASSISTING THE POLICE PENALTY OF £2O IMPOSED Charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker about January 13, Frederick Albert Meliaffy (Mr. Terry), pleaded guilty when he appeared on summons bo fore Mr. C. I?. Orr Walter, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said accused was a cripple and unable to do heavy work. Ho had not been in trouble before.

Mr. Terry said accused had actually been assisting the police when the betting slips were found in his possession. Counsel added that accused was suffering from progressive muscular atrophy, which was incurable, and asked the magistrate to take that into consideration.

"I take it that it is still a persistent offence," said the magistrate, imposing a fine of £2O and costs.
