SHIPPING DISPUTES

BIG COST TO PORTLAND ATTACK ON HARRY BRIDGES (Received January 20, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 19 The Mayor of Portland, Oregon, Mr. J. K. Carson, in testifying before the Commerce Committee of the Senate, expressed annoyance with Harry Bridges, the San Francisco Communist, who, he said, was "an Australian alien." Bridges had appeared in Portland several times and criticised the city's government. As he was not an American citizen he had no right to do this. Mr. Carson added that labour disorders in the shipping industry had cost Portland 1,000,000,000 dollars in the last three years.
