WAIKATO PEAT FIRES

SMOKE OVER HAMILTON NO DAMAGE REPORTED / [FROM OUR OTVN" CORRESPONDENT J HAMILTON, Wednesday Hamilton was enveloped in a thick mantle of smoke to-day. Fires had broken out in the Ilukuhia swamp, and the strong westerly wind blew the smoke over tho town and surrounding district.

The principal outbreak occurred in the scrub on a private road between Rukuliia and Ngaliinapouri, and a firo covering a space of over 300 yds. in width swept over the swamp. The flames reached a height of 4ft. Other fires occurred in the swamp near Ngaliinapouri and Whatawliata, while smaller outbreaks were in evidence at Eureka and Matangi. Most of the fires were started by farmers, who aro burning stumps and rubbish, and they aro being carefully watched. No damage to property has been reported.
