THE HARBOUR BRIDGE

Sir,—Mr. John Guiniven is to be complimented on his letter in Monday's Herald on this subject. H should be obvious to everyone favourable to the building of the bridge that the Government is spending millions on public works and other concerns less reproductive than tho Auckland Harbour bridge would be, and certainly less essential. The Premier's attitude that the Government will consider the construction of the bridge when tho Auckland local authorities agree on the question is political bluff, and should bo called during tho forthcoming , session by some gallant member, who would be privileged to expose the Government's fooling. Fred James.*

Sir, —The occasional congestion of vehicular ferry traffic during the summer is being made an argument in favour of the harbour bridge. It is a pity the North Shore people cannot hold to a sense of proportion on this matter. When they can .show that the bridge can be built without the city ratepayers running any possible chance of liability, they will be welcome to it. One practical stop would be for the North Shore boroughs to strike a betterment rate. Already the country is overloaded with public works liabilities. When we have 5,000,000 people it will be time enough to go in for a harbour bridge. At present it would be an extravagance benefiting a comparatively small number of people. Working Bullock.
