TRAIN STRIKES POST
MISHAP AT END OF LINE CONCRETE SLAB DISLODGED Struck by the locomotive of a mixed train from Kaipara, a massive samsonpost, in the area known as the triangle, Newmarket, was knocked from its mountings and rolled down a steep embankment into Sarawia Street, Parnell, about noon yesterday. The front bogey of the locomotive over-ran the line and was derailed.
Although sufficiently severe to dislodge tho samson-post at the end of tho line, the impact was not heavy enough to cause extensive damage to the locomotive, or to inconvenience travellers by the train. Tho cowcatcher of the locomotive was slightly buckled.
Tho'triangle is used for manoeuvring trains using the line to the north. The mixed train from Kaipara was run along the section* toward Sarawia Street, prior to being reversed into the NewmarKet station. Unable to withstand the pressure suddenly applied to it, the heavy Bam-son-post, a solid concrete slab, was capsized and rolled down the embankment, coming to rest in Sarawia Street, a blind road. Tho locomotive was moving vorv slowly at tho time, and was held safely at the top of the embankment after the collision. Little time was lost in returning the derailed bogey to tho line, and the train was able to continue after a brief delay. Later a breakdown van was taken to the scene of the mishap, and a gang of men commenced repairs.
