STREET WORK IN TOWNSHIP MERCURY BAY ROAD BRIDGES [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] COROMANDEL, Monday The engineer of the Coromandel County Council was authorised at today's meeting to call tenders for the reforming and metalling of Hodge's access road, Whenuakite riding. The public works engineer submitted an estimate, which was; covered by an item for £640 on the Public Works Estimates. The council decided to make representations to the Minister of Public Works to hare the Tapu-Coromandel section of the Thames-Coromandel coast road declared a State highway and the Coromandel-Colville road a main highway. Mr. L. Mandeno, consulting engineer to the council, reported that the priming bitumen coat had been laid through the township and down to the wharf. The contractor would shortly be starting the stretch of road at Mercury Bay. The ssaling coat would then be completed. The clearing of the bed of Carroll's Creek had been completed as far as the school and the menace of flooding in the centre of the town was much diminished. Mr. Mandeno said that to have complete immunity from flooding the cut made should be continued through the school property, but this was a matter for the Education Board. The street lighting scheme i' # t Whitianga, Mercury Bay, was completed before Christmas. The installation cost slightly over £2OO. Tenders will shortly be called for the reticulation of Coromandel township. The county engineer reported that most of the bridges on the CoromandelMercury Bay highway were deteriorating rapidly and many would have to be replaced within five, years. With the idea of conserving the under structures and prolonging the life of the wooden bridges, the engineer suggested that they be planked. The council authorised the engineer's suggestion to be carried out.

It was reported that concrete crossings had been made through two streams on the Mercury Bay road and that two bridges had been planked to cope with the holiday traffic.
