CANADIAN ATHLETES ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND AN AFTERNOON'S TRAINING I OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS The members of the Canadian team which .will compete at the British Empire* Games in Sydney next month arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Aorangi* and they will resume their voyage this afternoon. There are 79 in the team, comprising the follow-1 ing:—Twenty-six men athletes, 11 women athletes, 10 women swimmers, nine men swimmers, three cycKsts, six oarsmen, four wrestlers, six boxers, four bowlers. All members of the team indulged in training work yesterday. There was a full muster of both male and female athletes at the Domain in the afternoon, and their manager subsequently stated they were delighted with this ground and its beautiful surroundings. Tho jveather conditions were ideal and there was a fair crowd sprinkled round the ground to watch the training work. The marathon runners were able to really extend themselves for the first time since leaving Vancouver.' Both jnen and women hurdlers impressed with their styles. The jumpers made use of the pit in front of the stand, while the javelin throwers and shot putters occupied another corner of the field. - lor Swimmers The swimmers visited the Tepid Baths in the morning and later trained at the Mount Eden Baths. They found * the conditions ideal and tho warm weather 1 , of late made the water in the swimming pool conducive to a lengthy stay. Some excellent diving was performed by the visitors. All will train at the Tepid Baths between 1 p.m. and 2 .p.m. to-day. The cyclists traversed the suburban highways. One was a little more ambitious than his mates, as he undertook the ascent of College Hill. He had not progressed very far, however, before he was compelled to dismount and complete the rise on foot. The oarsmen had an outing on the .Waitemata in a boat loaned them by the Auckland Rowing Club. The boxers and wrestlers worked out at the Auckland Gymnasium and impressed the onlookerg who had congregated there. The Auckland Boxing Association is hopeful of being able to arrange a tournament, at which the Canadians will appear on their way home from the Games. The bowlers were met by the president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, - Mr. W. J. Truscott, and other officials and later on in the afternoon had a game of bowls on the Auckland Club's . green. Sprinter's Record Speaking of the individuals, Mr. Bobinson said the team contained some outstanding performers, and he said he would be disappointed if they did not capture a fair share of the laurels at' the Games. In the athletic section there were John Loaring, a finalist in the 400 metres hurdles at the last Olympic Games, while Larry O'Connor also qualified in the shorter hurdles event. Sigurd Neilsen has equalled the Canadian record of 9 3-Ss for the 100 yds. ; Stuart Frid is capable of pole-vault-ing over 13ft., while James Courtright can Jthrow the javelin between 215 ft. and 22oft. He won the Pan-American •throw in Texas last season. Jimmy Bartlett and Walter Younc are the marathon runners, the former having won the Canadian championship last September, while Young won the Boston marathon last April. In the swimming section were George Burleigh and Miss Phyllis Dewar, winners of two events each at the 1934 Games, and, m wrestling, Terry Evans, a middle-weight, won the 'British Empire championship in London four years ago. Voluntary Contributions "It has .been a big struggle in getting the team together," said Mr. Robinson. VThe expenditure has been 60,000 dollars, and of this a movmt 48,000 .dollafs was .rawed by voluntary subscription.
