MILFORD SOUND ROAD

TOURIST POSSIBILITIES MINISTER IMPRESSED PROVISION OF TRANSPORT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGH.L, Monday After spending 10 days in the Milford Sound region, the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, returned to Invercargill on Saturday greatly impressed with the future of this region. Referring to transport facilities, the Minister said that in addition to its train services the Railway Department operated an extensive network of road passenger services throughout Otago and Southland. "With the extension of the road which' is now under construction from Lake Te Anau up Eglinton and Hollyford Valley toward Milford Sound and through the road tuimef which is being driven through the Homer Saddle, Milford Sound will be connected by road with the South island highway system," said Mr. Sullivan. "The uncompleted portion of the new road, which includes the Homer Tunnel, leaves seven miles still to be done to Milford, and the work should be finished about April, 1940. The Te Anau-Milford Road traverses one of the most attractive scenic routes in the Dominion. Even in its present incomplete state the road lias attracted a considerable amount of traffic, which may be expected to reach large dimensions when the work is finished. "For these reasons the Railway Department regards the maintenance of a motor service of a high standard on the Lumsden-Milford Sound route as a matter of great importance. The Tourist Department has made arrangements with the Public Works Department for plans and estimates to be prepared providing for greatly_ increased accommodation at Milford Sound to cope with the growing tourist traffic.'
