THRIFT REWARDED
CANADIAN COXSWAIN VISIT TO EMPIRE GAMES BOY'S BUSINESS VENTURES > Thrift ancl a number of lucrative business operations have had their reward in the shape of plenty of pocket money for Kenny Jaggard, 14-year-old coxswain of the Victoria (British Columbia) rowing team which is part of the Canadian athletic contingent travelling to Sydney by the Aorangi for the British Empire Games. Kenny began saving at a very early age with a view to being prepared for anything that might happen when he "grew up." Now something has occurred and he is well fortified financially to gratify any boyish whim. The carefully accumulated cents which grew, in the bank, into dollars, which looked after themselves, came from a variety of sources. Kenny had an air gun and with a few friends improvised a shooting gallery. Other friends came along and paid a cent for two shots. For a season business flourished. Then he took on the job of cleaning and oiling the boots of members of a Rugby football team. That brought him in about three dollars. The construction of "gee gee" cars, which appear to be a type of juvenile conveyance much favoured among the younger set in Canada, earned him 10 dollars. He earned further rewards from running messages and, although he was still at school, he was able to make handsome profits by repairing radios in his spare time. Weighing only ost. 101b., Kenny is the son of Mr. R. P. Jaggard, a former Vancouver longshoreman who, following an injury, accepted the position of custodian of the Vancouver Rowing Club. For four years now Kenny has been a coxswain for the club and is very keen on the sport. When the champion Victoria Club team was chosen to represent Canada at the Empire Games it lacked a coxswain who was sufficiently light, and Kenny had the good fortune to be "bprrowed" for the occasion.
