Jan. 5 The Ministry of Labour estimates that on December 18, 1937, the number of insured persons in employment in Britain, exclusive of persons within the agricultural scheme, was approximately 11,437,000. This was 136,000 less than the month before, but 200,000 more than the year before. At the same date the unemployed totalled 1,665,407, comprising 1,283,604 wholly unemployed, 324,779 temporarily laid off, and 57,024 normally in casual employment. This was .166,204 more than t.he month before, but a decrease of 51,000 on the year before in tho numbers of wholly unemployed, including casuals, but an increase of about 143,000 in* the numbers of those temporarily laid off.
