TRIALS IN WELLINGTON breaking of two records MATTHEWS AND MISS FORBES [BT TELEGRAPH —I'BESS ASSOCIATION J ' WELLINGTON, Sunday At the national Empire Games trials vesterdjjy C., H. Matthews, the Canter bury and Now Zealand Olympic representative ran magnificent throe miles to break K. Murakoso's New Zealand record of 14m 11.6s by 4.65. The weather was. fine with a moderate breeze blowing, but the track was soft after a night's rain. The three miles field comprised Matthews. Canterbury; Crompton, Auckland; Geddes/, Otago; Gregory, Wellington: Mackay, Wellington; McCalman, Wellington. Matthews took the lead after the first lap, running easily at a fast pace. He covered the first mile in 4m 345. At two miles, which Matthews ran in 9m 255, lie was 200 yards ahead of Mackay, Crompton and "Geddes.
: Matthews lapped McCalman and Gregory at 2] miles and lie finished strongly three-quarters of a lap ahead of Geddes, with Crompton 12 yards back and Maekav a similar distance away fourth/ It is doubtful whether the record time will bo recognised because of the wind.
M iss Betty Forbes, Otago, broke her own recent high jump record with a leap of sft. OJin. Quinn, Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay, won lx>th sprints convincingly. Fitzsimnions faded at the finish of the furlong. / Miss D. Lumley, Auckland, finished with a gjreat burst to win the ladies' 100 yards event, and Miss Straehan, .Canterbury, also finished strongly. jn the quarter-mile Broadway set a great pace, but fell away, when Tyrie challenged him* The second race was a triumph for J. M. Watt, Wellington, who had been in training only a short while, after lying last when the ■print commenced.
The mile and half-mile races were disappointing. Allen led at the bell in the half-mile from Bell, Boot and Longley. Allen strode out with a furlong to go, but Boot overhauled him 50 yards from the tape and won by two yards. There were only four starters in the-mile, Black, of Wellington, Boot, Allen and Wade, Auckland. The first lap took 75 seconds. Boot led in the second lap and Allen in the third. Wade went to the lead at the bell, but Allen used his long stride and ran a splendid lap to finish strongly four yards ahead of Boot, who slowed up three yards in front of Wade. In both heat and final of the 120 yards hurdles Sharplev knocked the first hurdle, but took the rest faultlessly. He won by six inches from Bowie, Nelligan made the pace for Anderson in the 440 yards hurdles, but the latter could not maintain it. There, were no outstanding performances in the field events.
