FIFTY YEARS AGO
ELECTRIC STREET LAMPS Great interest was aroused in Auckland half a century ago by the nouncement that electric lights would be seen in the streets during the Christinas season. Following is an extract from the Nkw Zkal.vnd Hkrald of December 2, 1887: — "If all goes well the good citizens of Auckland will be basking in the mystic moon-like electric light during the Christmas holidays. Arrangements have been made by the City Council with Mr. Firth to light Queen Street by Christinas Eve, and he has a^r ee to continue the illumination fr ee ® cost to the council for a fortnight, the experiment should prove (successful Mr. Firth will establish a centra station at his old mill and "ill I'K 1 " the whole of Auckland. The principsj. hotels will probably take in the light;
