ATTACK IN CAR

WOMAN'S INJURIES YOUNG MEN COME TO AID SHOTS ALLEGEDLY FIRED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Tuesday As the result *of an attack by a man ! late last night a young woman of 21 I was admitted to a private hospital suffering from extensive injuries and severe shock. She was a passenger in a rental car and it is alleged that the attack took place on Saddle Hill near the old Coach and Horses Hotel on the road to Mosgiel. Assistance was given by two young men, Mr. John Snow and Mr. Arthur Lawson, who were travelling from Outram on a motor-cycle. It is stated that the man in the car fired shots at the young woman and also at the two men. The young woman managed to scramble out of the car, after which the man made off in the car toward Dqnedin. The Mosgiel police were notified and Constable Phillips and Dr. Spedding, of Mosgiel, treated the woman before sending her to a private hospital in Dunedin. She was found to be suffering from a fracture of the radius of •the left forearm, dislocation of the middle joint of the left foot, a wound an inch and a-half in length on the forehead extending to the bono, and another scalp wound half an inch in length at the back of the head. Her condition to-day was satisfactory, but she was suffering severely from shock. The central police were advised of the incident and Detective-Sergeant Le Sueur and Constable McDougall began investigations which took them to Waitati, where an abandoned rental car was found this morning. Bloodstains and a woman's purse and gloves were found in the car. A man was found at 8.15 a.m. on the premises of the \ acuum Oil Company on tho waterfront. His clothes were sodden cad he was suffering from a bullet wound below the right cheek bone. He was detained by DetectiveSergeant Le Sueur and Constable McDougall, and taken to a hospital for treatment. No names were disclosed by the police.
