ANNUAL PAIRS EVENT PUBLIC SERVICE TOURNEY ' FINAL TO-MORROW EVENING The seventeenth annual pairs tournament of the Auckland Public Service Bowling Association was played yesterday' on the Auckland and Epsom Bowling Club's greens, 60 teams representing 11 Government departments taking part: Prior to the commencement of play on the Auckland green, the president of the club, Mr. Hendry Luke, welcomed the players and remarked on the popularity of the game in service circles. The president of the association, Mr. R. Thomas, in welcoming the players, referred to the great loss Public Service bowling sustained by the death of Mr. W. J. Johnson, the well-known Stanley player. He also mentioned the absence of the association's indefatigable umpire, Mr. W. Williams, who was unable to fill his usual position owing to a family bereavement. The vice-president- of the association, Mr. L. Macey, opened the proceedings on the Epsom green. "Weather and green conditions were perfect and a most enjovablo day's bowling resulted. Five games of 14 heads were decided,' the players using three bowls only.
