WOMEN CHARGED
IDLE AND DISORDERLY WO GIVEN DETENTION Charged with being idle and disorderly persons, in that they hid in.* sufficient lawful means of support, three young women appeared in the Polico Court, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday, and pleaded guilty. Thoy were Dorothy Emily Merritt, aged 24 (Mr. Stubbs), Maida Ethel Frew, domestic, aged 19 (Mr. Aekins), and a third ffirl %vhose name was suppressed. Sub-Inspector Fox said Merritt had two previous convictions for the same jof ,thence,, and also been found in 'lVsly-grog X Warning from the police had been ignored. Mr. Stubbs said accused's parents were willing to take her back, but the magistrate said ho would put her out of the way until after the holidays, and imposed a sentence of two months' imprisonment. Referring to Frew, Mr. Fox said she had been released on probation from Point Halswell in October, 1936, and had since been placed on probation for 12 months for theft at Dunedin. Th'e accused had been frequents ing hotels and had been convicted for being in a sly-grog shop. Adjutant Hart said it was doubtful if the Salvation Army could do anything for the accused, and. the magistrate ordered her to be SQRt to a Borstal Institution for not more than two years. 1 . '.' . ' t "The reports show she is a different tvpe from the other two," said Sir, Fox, when the third girl was charged. He suggested that if she were kept away from the others she would be all right. The case was adjourned for three months, the accused to stay in the care of .the- Salvation Army.
